For my zine, I wanted to make a field journal. I am currently in a Paleobiology class where in labs we draw items such as fossils and pseudofossils. Our labs do not require us to go outside but what if they did? What if we actually got to walk around and look at fossils? I have kept field journals in the past for art classes, so I wanted to combine the two. I was hoping to hand draw some fossil examples and write what I have learned in class about them and what the environment around them would look like if I had found them myself. I love fossils, and as a geology minor I am always so excited when we get to look at them! I mean, who doesn't like dinosaurs? I love how geologic history can make us feel small, and really put how short our life spans have been into perspective. What is fun for me about field journals is there is not a strict format, I have a lot of freedom to present my findings the way I want to and I like looking at pictures! A lot of the time while doing geology labs, the drawing is my favorite part. It allows me to get creative in a STEM field, which is usually quite rare. I am always looking for an overlap between art and environmental or earth sciences. I am looking forward to creating something that is both visually intriguing and depicts my real educational process. I also hope to show what I make to my Paleobiology professors!
